"Five Little Frogs" from Singable Songs for the Very Young, by Raffi
Resource Type: Music
Amazon.com Review: Though recorded in the 1970s, this classic Raffi album is still one of the children's troubadour's bestsellers. The gentle, joyful style; simple musical arrangements; and easy-to-follow up-front vocals have made Singable Songs for the Very Young a favorite among tiny tots, parents, and preschool teachers. By combining traditional songs like "The More We Get Together," "Down by the Bay," and "Going to the Zoo" with Raffi originals like "I Wonder If I'm Growing," "Peanut Butter Sandwich," and a jazzy near-cover, "Old MacDonald Had a Band," the album has a familiar feel while giving young children the opportunity to learn new songs and rhythms. Other notable titles include the interactive "Brush Your Teeth," "Five Little Pumpkins," and the tongue-twisting "Willoughby Wallaby Woo."

A Drop of Water
Resource Type: Book
Beginning with a child exploring the water in a creek, Morrison imagines how a drop on his finger made its journey through the water cycle. Detailed, multicolored illustrations take readers high in the sky as the red-tailed hawk flies and the raindrops fall, providing a view of the marsh and the mountain stream from above. Finally, the pictures zoom back to a close-up of the boy to complete the circle. Readers can appreciate this narration on two levels: first, as a simple story of the hydrologic cycle; and second, as a search to find various types of plants and animals. Three pages of informative facts about each bird, mammal, and plant pictured are appended.

A Drop of Water
Resource Type: Book
The curious, protean nature of water has fascinated people for ages, and Walter Wick--the photographer of Scholastic's highly acclaimed I Spy series--is no exception. Wick is a great admirer and collector of 100-year-old science books where, according to his afterword, "Even the simplest experiments appeared as if improbable or impossible things were happening. Intrigued, I recreated some of the experiments and photographed them with my camera. The results seemed magical, but not because of any photographic trick; it was only the forces of nature at work. It was from these explorations that the idea for this book emerged."
As you're admiring the "crown" created by a water drop splashing into a pool, or how many water droplets can fit on the head of a pin (the smallest droplet on the pin contains more than three trillion water molecules), you'll learn about evaporation, condensation, snowflakes, how clouds form, and more amazing water tricks. Wick's other artfully composed photographs include a "wild wave" caused by a brown egg dropped in a water glass, soap bubbles with a "shimmering liquid skin," a snowflake at 60 times its actual size, and dew on a spider web. Like many old-fashioned science books, A Drop of Water ends with a list of simple experiments may lure the young reader into the world of scientific investigation. Unlike many old science books, this one also stands on its own as a beautiful, notable collection of photographs.

A Gift From the Sea
Resource Type: Book
A boy picks up a rock that he finds on the beach. He holds it in his hand, and admires it. He doesn't know that the rock has been on a great journey through time in making its way to him: that it was spewed forth from a fiery volcano, then altered by eons of wind and rain, frozen during the ice age, and finally carried out into the ocean, where it lay on the floor of the sea before being thrust onto the shore at his feet. But he does know that it is a gift from the sea.

A House for Hermit Crab
Resource Type: Book
"Time to move," said Hermit Crab one day. "I've grown too big for this little shell." Much-loved master of cut-paper collage Eric Carle created A House for Hermit Crab to comfort any little ones (okay, and adults, too) who dread change--whether the new shell is a new home, a new school, or a new experience. In this upbeat story, Hermit Crab casts his eyestalks on a newer, bigger shell, but it seems plain and unwelcoming at first. Kids will love Carle's rich, affectionate portrayal of Hermit Crab's ocean odyssey, and the gentle story may help them see that giving up the old for the new is not a loss, but an opportunity.

This lively book tells young readers everything they want to know about the life and behavior of the southern sea otter, its northern cousin, and lesser-known river otters. Forty color photographs by 13 exceptional wildlife photographers show the otter at work and play, while range maps show both current and historic locations of the otters. It's all here for the budding biologist or zoologist, or the just-plain-curious kid: otter methods of courtship and reproduction, eating habits, and the animal's complex relationship with humankind, including how these playful animals continue to be threatened by oil spills and the encroachment of human society. An "Otter Secrets" section presents "amazing but true" characteristics of the otter, while the "To Learn More" page points curious readers to related websites, books, organizations, videos, and DVDs.

Around the Pond: Who's Been Here?
Resource Type: Book
An introduction to eight different wild creatures that live near or in ponds. Following the same format she used in In the Woods and In the Snow (both Greenwillow, 1995), George creates a guessing game for two children taking a walk in a natural area. Here, the youngsters set out to pick blueberries for pie, but they are soon distracted by the telltale signs they see and items they find along an old deer path around a pond. With each discovery, they ask "Who's been here?" Turning the page provides the answer?viewers will find a brilliant gouache painting of the animal, fish, or bird in its natural habitat. There is a brief note on each creature at the end. A few quibbles?the wood duck's nest is so high in the tree that it is doubtful children could see into it (but readers have a wonderful bird's-eye view); the heron's body is shown but not the distinctive long legs; and it's not clear whether the river otter has running water to swim in. Flaws aside, the large detailed paintings and the brief text make this a lovely book to share with children as an introduction to animal life and to tracking.

Beyond the Moon: A Conversational, Common Sense Guide to Understanding the Tides
Resource Type: Book
Finally, someone has written a comprehensive, easily readable explanation of the tides on earth that is both simple enough for students and solid enough for their professors. Step by step, by analogy and illustration, Beyond the Moon describes how the cyclical motion of the near solar system is impressed upon the earth’s oceans, and how the hydraulics over the continental shelf and the geography of the coastline orchestrate this rhythm into the bewildering variety of tide patterns seen around the globe. This volume demystifies the complexity of the tides by systematically examining its many constituents and demonstrates that: “Nature is, at once, awesome in complexity and beautiful in simplicity.”

Bill Nye the Science Guy's Big Blue Ocean
Resource Type: Book
Make a tsunami in your bathtub! OK, so it’s only a little tsunami, but it’s still a fun way to learn about the ocean and sea life. Witty Bill Nye helps children explore marine biology through lively descriptions, silly pictures, and offbeat experiments to try at home or school with basketballs, balloons, and squid (or a reasonable facsimile).

Blue-Footed Booby: Bird of the Galapagos
Resource Type: Book
From School Library Journal: This life cycle of newly-hatched Booby follows his development and explorations until he is totally independent from his parents. Without a hint of anthropomorphism, Millhouse manages to convey a sense of life in this Ecuadorian Archipelago. Attractive and realistic watercolor paintings help to enliven an overly simplified and unexciting text. The book is poorly organized and wrongly titled; a large portion of the book discusses the general ecology of the Galapagos Islands and other land and marine animals found there. One illustration does not reflect the activity described in the text. However, the book does present new material for this grade level and could serve as an introduction to these scientifically important islands. Other books such as Selsam's Land of the Giant Tortoise (Four Winds, 1977; o.p.) and the Couffers' Galapagos Summer (Putnam, 1975; o.p.) are for older readers.
